Makati Pet Microchipping Project Implementation

Last 17th January 2018, the Makati Veterinary Services Office (VSO) with the assistance of Plaridel Products and Services, Inc. continued its city-wide microchipping program at Barangay Kasilawan and Pinagkaisahan.

The veterinary services officer started implanting microchips around 9 am until 3 pm. Dogs and cats qualified for microchipping must be at least 4 months of age, with a body weight of not less than 750 grams, with updated rabies vaccination reflected on its vaccination card and the owner must present a valid ID for reference.

A total of 111 dogs and cats were microchipped for the two barangays (60 animals from Brgy. Kasilawan and 51 animals from Brgy. Pinagkaisahan). The services continued at the said barangay until Friday, 19 January 2018.

The microchipping program was launched in Makati last October 2017, the program aimed to provide city-wide free-of-charge microchip implantation for dogs and cats of all Makati citizens. The program is led by the Makati City Veterinary Office officer-in-charge, Dr. Ma. Katharina “Jing” Mangahas, and will cover 27 barangay and six villages. The program is expected to implant 32,000 microchips to dogs and cats.

Biothermal microchip (Pet-iChip) is a passive type microchip equipped with temperature sensing technology implanted between the animal’s shoulder blades. It is a permanent identification system that works even without batteries and uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology that automatically detects the implanted chip when scanned by passing a scanner on the animal.

Through microchip technology coupled with animal database, the animal’s information such as breed, body temperature, vaccinations records can be easily accessed. The following information will aid with animal’s health and disease surveillance, rescue, and transport of animal.
